"How IT Organisations Interpret and Adopt DevOps: Exploring Motivations and Implementation"

Abstract:

This study examines how Swedish IT organisations interpret, understand and implement DevOps, as well as the organisational and technical factors that influence the adoption process. Using a qualitative research design based on nine semi-structured interviews with industry leaders, DevOps managers and technical experts, both cultural and structural dimensions of DevOps adoption are analysed. The study identifies key motivations behind the introduction of DevOps, such as the need for faster deliveries, improved collaboration between development and operations, and increased quality and stability in the supply chain. At the same time, a number of recurring challenges emerge, including unclear division of responsibilities, difficulties with change management, and technical integration barriers when introducing common platforms and automated workflows.

As a theoretical framework, the analysis combines the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) with established leadership theories, enabling a deeper understanding of how individual perceptions, organisational support and leadership style influence the success of DevOps implementation. The results show that successful adoption requires more than technical competence – it requires attentive leadership, strong communication structures, clear goals and strategic anchoring of DevOps principles throughout the organisation. The study contributes to existing technology adoption research by highlighting how DevOps is understood in practice and how organisations navigate the complexity of this transformation process. In addition to theoretical insights, practical recommendations are presented for businesses that want to introduce or further develop DevOps, with a focus on sustainable implementation, organisational maturity and long-term value creation.

DevOps Engineer (400 YH-points)

Vocational Higher Education

2022-2024
Program Description:

Comprehensive 2-year vocational program in DevOps engineering, focusing on infrastructure automation, cloud operations, and continuous integration and delivery.

This 400 YH-credit program provided advanced competence in automation, cloud infrastructure, and system development. Core areas included Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Ansible), containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), CI/CD pipelines, administration of Linux and Windows servers, IT security and vulnerability analysis, monitoring, and agile project methodologies. The education combined theoretical knowledge with practical experience in programming (Python, Java), version control, and troubleshooting. Practical components were carried out through projects and an extensive internship (LIA) period, preparing students to design, optimize, and automate infrastructure solutions that support modern DevOps workflows.

LIA-rapport Abstract:

This report documents my experience implementing the transition to NGINX Ingress Controller to handle limitations and meet future requirements for incoming traffic management in a Kubernetes cluster.

By replacing Azure Application Gateway, challenges were identified related to limitations in the number of HTTP requests and lack of support for HTTP/2 protocol. The method involved evaluating NGINX Ingress Controller and comparing it with existing solutions. Results showed the advantages of NGINX Ingress for handling large volumes of requests and support for modern protocols. The conclusion emphasized the importance of choosing an appropriate Ingress Controller to ensure scalability and compatibility with future requirements. Additionally, I explored and implemented a new WAF solution to complement Ingress functionality and replace Azure Front Door. Results showed increased control over security configuration and improved protection level for applications. The conclusion emphasized the importance of integrating robust security solutions to ensure a secure and efficient operational environment.

Leadership and organisation (22,5 ECTS)

Linnéuniversitetet

2020-2023
  • Organization, Communication and Leadership 7,5 ECTS
  • Sociological Applications II 7,5 ECTS
  • Introduction to Sociology 7,5 ECTS
Program Description:

My studies at Linnaeus University included courses in leadership, organization, sociology, and communication, with a focus on how groups, working life, and organizational processes function. The education strengthened my ability to analyze social structures, understand collaboration dynamics, and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

I began these studies before deciding to change my career path to IT and DevOps, but the knowledge has proven highly valuable even in technical roles—especially in terms of teamwork, collaboration dynamics, leadership, and structured work methods. This academic foundation also became directly applicable in my later dissertation work at Coventry University, where I analysed leadership theories within the technical domain of DevOps.

Standalone courses (15 ECTS)

Stockholm university

2011-2014
  • Swedish Language Proficiency Qualification Course 0 ECTS
  • Basic Course in Commercial Law, Introductory Course in Legal Studies 15 ECTS
Program Description:

I studied Swedish as a second language at Stockholm University as my first step into the academic world in Sweden, focusing on grammar, oral skills, reading comprehension and social studies. These studies gave me a solid linguistic and cultural foundation for further university studies.

I then completed a basic course in commercial law and legal overview to further demonstrate and strengthen my academic language skills, as well as to develop my understanding of Swedish regulations, structure and formal communication.
